I Built a Full Crisp Alternative in One Afternoon. SaaS Companies Should Be Worried.

How AI-assisted development is compressing months of work into hours — and what it means for the $200B SaaS industry

Last week I needed live chat for a few websites I run. I looked at the usual options — Crisp, Intercom, Tawk.to, LiveChat. The cheapest paid plan was $90/month per workspace for small teams. Intercom wanted $74/month. For a chat box.

I thought: how hard can this be? So I built my own. Open source, self-hosted, completely free. The whole thing — backend, real-time messaging, embeddable widget, database, Docker deployment — took me one afternoon.

Not one week. Not one sprint. One afternoon.

And that should terrify every SaaS company charging monthly subscriptions for commodity features.

The product

It’s called HeySupport. Here’s what it does:

  • A socket server that handles real-time messaging between visitors and operators. Built with Node.js, Socket.IO, and MongoDB.
  • A chat widget — a single JavaScript file you drop on any website. One script tag and your site has live chat. 21 KB, no dependencies.
  • Docker Compose deployment. Clone the repo, run one command, done. Five minutes to production.

Visitors come to your site, click the chat bubble, type a message. Your support team sees it instantly and replies. Messages fly back and forth over WebSockets. Conversations are stored in MongoDB.

That’s it. That’s the product Crisp charges $25/month for.

What used to take days now takes hours

Let me be honest about the timeline here.

I’ve been building software for years. A project like this — a Socket.IO backend with proper event handling, MongoDB persistence, a polished embeddable widget with its own isolated CSS that doesn’t break host websites, Docker setup, documentation — this is normally a 3 to 5 day job minimum. Even for an experienced developer. Two days if you’re cutting corners and skipping docs.

With AI-assisted development, I shipped the entire thing in a few hours.

Not because the code writes itself. It doesn’t. You still need to know what you’re building, how the pieces fit together, what the architecture should look like. You need to make decisions about event naming, database schema design, CSS specificity in embedded widgets, and a hundred other things that require real engineering judgment.

But the actual typing — the boilerplate, the CSS properties you’ve written a thousand times, the event handler patterns, the Docker Compose syntax — all of that becomes 20x faster. The boring parts evaporate. You focus on decisions, not keystrokes.

Why SaaS companies should be concerned

Here’s the uncomfortable truth for SaaS businesses: a huge percentage of B2B SaaS products are thin wrappers around well-understood patterns.

Live chat? It’s WebSockets + a database + a UI. The core technology has been open source for over a decade.

Email marketing? It’s templates + a sending queue + analytics. The hard part — actually delivering emails — is handled by SendGrid or AWS SES.

Project management? It’s CRUD operations with a nice drag-and-drop interface.

Form builders? It’s dynamic form rendering + a database.

These products survive because of two moats:

1. Time — It used to take weeks or months to build a reasonable alternative.

2. Polish — Getting the UI right, handling edge cases, building integrations.

AI is destroying moat #1.

When a single developer can build a working competitor in an afternoon, the “it would take too long to build ourselves” argument collapses overnight.

Moat #2 still matters. Crisp has a beautiful operator dashboard, mobile apps, integrations with Slack and email, chatbots, and years of polish. My project doesn’t have all that — yet. But the gap between “doesn’t exist” and “good enough” has shrunk from months to hours.

And “good enough” kills more startups than “perfect.”

The real shift

The change isn’t that AI writes code. The change is that AI compresses the timeline between idea and working product to almost nothing.

Before AI-assisted development, this project would look like:

  • Monday: Set up the project, configure the backend
  • Tuesday: Build the Socket.IO event system, database layer
  • Wednesday: Build the embeddable widget, fight CSS issues
  • Thursday: Docker setup, testing, debugging
  • Friday: Documentation, cleanup, ship it

After:

  • Morning: Architecture decisions, core backend, widget
  • Afternoon: Polish, testing, docs, deployment. Ship it.

Same developer. Same skills. Same quality. 20x faster.

This means every developer on earth can now ship 20x more projects per year. Every company with a developer can build internal tools instead of buying SaaS subscriptions. Every startup can validate ideas in days instead of months.

What this means for you

If you’re a developer: you’re more powerful than ever. One person can now do what used to require a small team. The bottleneck isn’t writing code anymore — it’s knowing what to build and making good architectural decisions. Experience and taste matter more than typing speed. Your value just went up.

If you’re a SaaS founder charging for commodity features: your moat is shrinking every month. The only sustainable advantages left are network effects, data, integrations, and trust. If your entire pitch is “we do X so you don’t have to build it” — that pitch gets weaker every single day.

If you’re a business paying for SaaS tools: you have more options than ever. For many tools, there’s now an open-source, self-hosted alternative that a developer can set up in an afternoon. You own the data, you control the costs, and you’re never locked in.
